From the first call to the final invoice. Most delays come from the account and insurance steps, so start those first.

Short answer

Pick the trailer, call 2 or 3 branches near you, submit the credit application, send a certificate of insurance, then inspect and photograph the trailer at pickup and at return (Premier FAQ).

  1. Pick the trailer

Match it to your freight with the trailer types guide. Note length, door type, liftgate, reefer or flatbed specs.

  2. Find branches

Use the company directory: 156 branches of 5 national lessors in 32 states. Call at least two for availability and rates.

  3. Open an account

Submit the commercial credit application. Approval can take days; do it before you need the trailer.

  4. Send insurance

Have your agent send the certificate of insurance with the lessor as additional insured and loss payee, or buy the waiver. See insurance.

  5. Inspect at pickup

Walk around with the inspection checklist, photograph every side, and get existing damage written on the pickup paperwork.

  6. Run it

Do your pre-trip each day and write up defects on your driver vehicle inspection report. Call the lessor’s roadside line for breakdowns, not your own shop, or you may not be reimbursed.

  7. Return it

Sweep it out, return reefer fuel to the pickup level, photograph it again at the gate, and keep the interchange receipt.

Questions people ask

How fast can I get a rental trailer?

Same day once your account is approved and the lessor has your certificate of insurance. Approval is the slow part.

Can I return a rented trailer to a different branch?

Often yes. XTRA and Premier both arrange one-way moves; ask the branch before you leave.
