Balance scale weighing renting against leasing

Short answer

Rent for short or uncertain needs, lease for a contract or season you can see, buy for steady, long demand. Renting costs the most per day; owning costs the most up front, and a trailer loses about 30% of its value right after purchase (Premier).

A quick break-even

Divide what you would pay to own a trailer for a year (payment, insurance, tires, inspections, repairs) by the monthly rental rate. If you need the trailer more months a year than that number, owning or leasing wins. If you need it fewer, renting wins.

Why fleets mix all three

Premier's own article says larger fleets often run roughly 75 to 80% owned, 15 to 20% leased and 5 to 10% rented, and that no single mix fits everyone (Premier). Rentals cover peaks and breakdowns; leases cover contracts.

Leasing to a carrier is different

If you are an owner-operator leasing your own equipment to a motor carrier, that lease follows 49 CFR Part 376, a separate set of rules from renting a trailer from a lessor.

Questions people ask

Lease if you can commit to a year or more of steady use; rent if you need the trailer for days to a few months or are not sure how long.
